Instagram Videos Not Loading on Android or iOS? 6 Ways to Fix

From photo enthusiasts, selfie addicts, brands, to celebrities, everyone is now on Instagram.

The impact of social media on businesses is as such that many of them now buy Instagram likes, followers, comments and views to improve their social credibility.

The photo-sharing app now has more than 800 million users out of which 500 million are daily active users. Moreover, as per a MobileMonkey report, Instagram is expected to have more than 26 million new users by 2021.

It has outgrown its primary function and is now a crucial part of the social networking landscape.


But what started as a photo sharing app is now much more interactive. Apart from uploading your pictures, you can now also record up to 16 seconds of videos and share it on Instagram.

The feature is so popular that there are now several 3rd party tools that people use for editing their Instagram videos to make them look amazing and entertaining.

However, a lot of people have recently started complaining that videos on their Instagram feed do not work.

They often get stuck while playing or just don’t play at all. The problem is now so widespread that we’ve compiled a list of some possible solutions.

No matter if you have an Android or iOS device, these solutions would probably solve the video playback problem.

  1. Ensure that you have a stable Wi-Fi or data connection

The most common reason for Instagram videos not playing is a problem with your internet connection.

Needless to say, to play the videos online you need to have a stable internet connection and if you do not have one or if it is unstable, the videos might not play at all or just keep buffering.

There are a few things that you can do to try and fix this problem.

If you are using cellular data, make sure that the network is stable and the data is enabled in the settings menu.

Moreover, if you have a prepaid plan, it’d also be helpful to ensure that you have data left in it.

Ensure that the cables are properly inserted in the router and it is not placed close to a heat source.

If all of this seems fine, see if other devices can connect to the Wi-Fi and are able to transmit data to know if the problem is because of the Wi-Fi connection or your device.

You can also contact your Wi-Fi service provider if you believe that the problem is due to an unstable connection.

If you’ve already tried all this and the videos are still not playing, reset your network settings and restart your phone. Try reconnecting to the network again and check whether the videos are now playing.

If you are on Android-

  • Go to Settings
  • Press Backup & Reset
  • Choose Network Settings Reset
  • Press Reset Settings

For iOS-

  • Select Settings
  • Choose General and then Reset
  • Look for Reset Network Settings option
  • Enter passcode when asked
  • Press the Reset Network Settings option
  1. Update or reinstall the Instagram app

A lot of users were able to solve this problem by updating or reinstalling their Instagram app.

While you cannot really question the stability of the app, technical glitches are not uncommon so it is worth a try.

With this, you’ll be able to remove all the stored Instagram cache and data which might be interfering with the video playback.


If you are using Android, follow these steps-

  • Go to Settings
  • Select Apps
  • Scroll down to select Instagram
  • Uninstall the app and then restart your device before installing the Instagram app again

For iOS users-

  • Select and hold the app until you see the ‘X’
  • Press the ‘X’ to delete the app
  • Restart the device
  • Go to App Store and search for Instagram
  • Install it again and see if the videos are playing now

Before you go ahead and reinstall the app, make sure that you first check if there is a new version of Instagram app available, especially if you have disabled auto updates.

Go to the Play Store or App Store and search for Instagram. Select the Update option and see if the problem is fixed.

  1. Try clearing Instagram app data and cache

There is also a possibility that the app data store in the background by the Instagram app might be corrupted or there might be a lot of cache files stored on your device due to which new videos are not playing.

Depending on your OS, follow these steps to clear the app data and cache-

For Android-

  • Go to Settings
  • Select Apps
  • Choose Instagram
  • Look for Storage button and then select Clear cache

If you are using iPhone-

  • Select Settings
  • Press General
  • Look for iPhone storage
  • Search for the Instagram app, select it and then press Offload App option
  1. Switch off the power-saving mode

The power-saving mode is an excellent way to save battery but the feature works by severely limiting the performance of your device, including playback of Instagram videos.


If you have the power-saving mode on, disable it and the videos will start playing on your Instagram app.

If you are on Android 7, use the following steps-

  • Go to Settings
  • Select Device Maintenance
  • Look for Battery
  • Choose Performance Mode
  • Select High Performance

For Android 8-

  • Go to Settings
  • Select Battery
  • In the ‘App usage in since full charge’ section, search for Instagram
  • Enable the ‘While in background’ option

For iOS-

  • Go to Settings
  • Select Battery
  • Toggle the Low Power Mode to off
  1. Disable the Autoplay feature

Some users also found that the Autoplay feature also interferes with the playback of Instagram videos.

They found that when the Autoplay feature is disabled, the videos play normally.


However, unlike Facebook and Twitter, Instagram does not provide the option to disable Autoplay when you are using Wi-Fi. However, it can be disabled if you are using mobile data.

For Android and iOS-

  • Open the Instagram app and log in to your account
  • Look for the Settings option
  • Select Use mobile data and choose Use less data

Remember that there is no way to disable Autoplay when you are using Wi-Fi. Alternatively, a lot of people were able to fix this problem by enabling the Autoplay. Try both to see if the videos play normally now.

  1. Use 3rd party system recovery solutions

You can now find several 3rd party system recovery solutions that can help fix any problem with any of the apps or your device.

Many of these solutions are completely free and can be downloaded to your desktop computer or laptop. Connect your device with the Instagram app in it after you’ve downloaded a software to start fixing the problem.

Make sure that you first go through the user manual of the software to quickly get the problem fixed. You can find such software for Windows as well as Mac operating systems.
