Instagram direct message not working- How to fix it?

While Instagram was founded in 2010, it was only a photo-sharing app initially.

It only allowed users to post photos and like and comment on photos posted by other Instagram users.

In 2012, Instagram launched the direct messaging features and 15-second video clips were launched in 2013.

Currently, as per Statista, Instagram has more than 1 billion monthly active users, making it one of the most popular social networking platforms.


While Instagram is not really known to have a lot of bugs or errors, it is not uncommon for a platform as big as Instagram to have a few issues every now and then.

Apart from Instagram notifications not working, another very common problem with Instagram is that of the direct messages (DMs) not working.

If you’re struggling with the same problem, this post might have a fix.

  1. Log out, restart the device, and log in again

The easiest way to resolve this issue is to log out of your Instagram account, restart your mobile phone and then try logging in again.

Send a direct message to someone after you’ve logged in to see if you are now able to send the messages.

A lot of things work simultaneously on your phone to make the app work flawlessly.

If any of the processes is not functioning as it should, it can result in the messaging error.

When you log out of your account and restart the device, all the processes too restart again and this can resolve any common problem related to any of the processes.

  1. Update the app

If you are a brand with a lot of Instagram followers, not being able to send direct messages can not only just be annoying but can also negatively affect your credibility on the platform.

As per a report by eMarketer, almost 70% of the top brands now use Instagram for marketing.

Anything that can harm your credibility on Instagram is an opportunity for your competitors.

If you are not able to send direct messages to other Instagram users, make sure that you are using the latest version of the app.

Go to the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) and search for Instagram to ensure that your app is updated.

If a new update is available, update the app and try sending direct messages.

If this doesn’t resolve the problem, try the next fix.

  1. Uninstall and reinstall the app

If the app is updated already, try to uninstall the app and reinstall it again.

For Android, this can be done by going to Settings and then selecting the Manage Applications option.

Search for Instagram here, select it and tap the uninstall button.

If you are using iOS device, tap and hold the Instagram app so that a small cross appears on the app.

Tap on this cross to uninstall the app. Once uninstalled, go to the App Store/Play Store to install the app again.

After downloading, log in to the app again and try sending a direct message.

  1. Force stop the app and clear Instagram cache

If you’ve tried the methods listed above, try force stopping it and clearing the cache.

Go to the Settings menu of your mobile phone and look for the App Settings or Additional Settings option.

Here, select Application Management and search for Instagram app.

Select the app and tap on the Force Stop option. There’ll also be an option to clear the cache.

Try restarting the app after this and you should be able to send direct messages now.

This happens because the app collects data in the background.

If the data exceeds the storage limit, the app often starts developing many different problems, including this DM problem.

  1. Blocked account

If you are unable to send direct messages to a particular user, it is possible that the user might have blocked you.

You cannot send DMS to people who have blocked you.

If you are not able to send direct messages, try sending them to a couple of users to see if you are just not able to send messages to a particular individual.

To confirm if someone has blocked you, try searching for your Instagram profile through their username.

If you cannot find them, then the user might have blocked you.

If this is the case, there is no way you can send a direct message to that user.

  1. Get in touch with the Instagram support team

If none of these tricks work, the only option left with you is to get in touch with the support team of Instagram.

They have an excellent support team which is generally able to resolve all the account-related problems.

No matter if your DMs are not working or you are not able to view your Instagram comments, likes, or followers, they are sure to provide an easy solution.

For this, open the Instagram app and tap on the Settings option. Scroll down and you’ll see the option for reporting problem.

Select it and follow the instructions to report your problem. You should get a reply along with a solution generally within 24 hours.

Direct message is one of the most important features of Instagram and not being able to send them to your friends and followers can surely be annoying.
